Progress Isn’t Default

Day 85

Progress isn’t a default setting — it’s hard won through years of blood, sweat and tears. It’s consistently looking for new ways to grow. It’s consistently fighting mediocrity and complacency. To grow you first need a vision. Once you have that, you fight like hell to get there. You flail and kick and scream and try and fail and fail and fail again. You get up and try again. But it’s the effort that gets you closer to progress. Sure, you can apply this to your own self-improvement journey, but I’m thinking more broadly. I’m thinking about societal (human even) progress.

We assume, “but it’s 2017.” The year doesn’t mean shit. The question is what are we fighting for in that year? The question is what have we accomplished? Are we really any closer to equality than we were 50 years ago? Perhaps. But it’s not because it’s 50 years later, but because people saw injustice and fought it tirelessly, relentlessly. To move forward, we have to move. All of us.
